The Blackjacks were a professional wrestlingtag team. The team consisted of Blackjack Mulligan and Blackjack Lanza. After forming in the 1970s, they wrestled in a variety of professional wrestling promotions, including the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). They were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006.

The original Blackjacks[edit]

The duo first joined forces in 1971. They were managed by Bobby Heenan.[1]

The Blackjacks won multiple tag team titles, including the WWA Tag Team Championship and two tag-team championships in WCCW. They, however, are most known for winning the WWWF Tag Team Championship (with Lou Albano as their manager) on August 26, 1975 by defeating Dominic DeNucci and Pat Barrett.[2]

On April 1, 2006, The Blackjacks were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Heenan.[1]

The New Blackjacks[edit]

In early 1997, Mulligan’s son, Barry Windham, and Lanza’s nephew, Justin 'Hawk' Bradshaw, formed The New Blackjacks in the WWF. They were known as Blackjack Windham and Blackjack Bradshaw, who originally competed as heels, but later as babyfaces.[3] They competed in a four-way tag team match at WrestleMania 13, which was won by The Headbangers. They would then feud with The Godwinns. The team never reached the success of their predecessors and disbanded in January 1998, as Windham turned on Bradshaw.

Business career[ edit ]

WWE describes Layfield as a 'self-made' millionaire. [97] In 2003, Layfield published a book on financial management titled Have More Money Now . [98] He and his wife, Oppenheimer Holdings financial analyst Meredith Whitney , were featured in the August 2008 issue of Fortune magazine . [97]

Layfield is the founder of Layfield Energy. In 2008, Layfield Energy launched a drink called MamaJuana Energy. [38] In March 2009, Layfield Energy became the main sponsor and advertiser of Ohio Valley Wrestling , a former WWE developmental promotion based in Louisville, Kentucky . [99]

Layfield has lived full-time in Bermuda since shortly after his retirement from in-ring activity. Feeling confined living in New York City, he spent the summer of 2009 in Bermuda at his wife's encouragement, and the couple soon bought a full-time home there. As he acclimated to Bermuda, he noticed what he called 'the almost predominant black-on-black violence that is unfortunately pervasive throughout the local neighborhoods', and in 2011 created the nonprofit organization Beyond Rugby Bermuda, using rugby union to provide young people with an alternative to gangs. The organization is an offshoot of Beyond Sport, a South African nonprofit that uses running for similar purposes; Layfield was introduced to that group's founder when he and his wife visited the country for the 2010 FIFA World Cup . He spends much of his time outside of WWE with the organization, filling duties as varied as celebrity fundraising and mowing the rugby field. Beyond Rugby Bermuda began with six boys; as of February 2017, more than 400 boys and girls were involved. Layfield is now a global ambassador for Beyond Sport alongside figures such as Tony Blair and Desmond Tutu . [100]

    After the GWF shut down in September 1994, he joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). Layfield won the NWA North American Heavyweight Championship on January 14, 1995, defeating Kevin Von Erich . [11] Two months later, he lost the NWA North American title to Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine .

    WWE Hall of Famer Blackjack Mulligan — real name Robert Windham — died on Thursday at the age of 73.

    Mulligan had been fighting illnesses for a long period.

    He is the father of former pro wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Barry Windham, Kendall Windham and father-in-law of another wrestler, Mike Rotunda, whose sons Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas are currently WWE Superstars.

    WWE released a statement on his passing:

    WWE is saddened by the news that Robert Windham, aka WWE Hall of Famer Blackjack Mulligan, has passed away at age 73.. Considered to be one of the toughest competitors of his day –€” only his rival Andre the Giant could overshadow the 6-foot-9, 345-pound stud from Eagle Pass, Texas –€” Mulligan served as a U.S. Marine in Guam and played for the New York Jets before gaining fame in the ring. With his signature all-black gear — from his cowboy hat to his leather glove — and his thick western mustache, Mulligan cut the figure of a dangerous outlaw in the ring and proved every bit as treacherous with his feared iron claw hold.

    Mulligan was part of a team known as 'The Blackjacks' in WWE. His partner was Blackjack Lanza. They won the WWE tag-team titles in 1975.

    He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006 with Lanza.

    New doesn't always mean improved, and in the case of the New Blackjacks, they fell straight on their curly-mustached faces.

    Formed in 1997 and disbanded a year later, the New Blackjacks consisted of Blackjack Mulligan's son, Barry Windham, and Justin Bradshaw, who was billed as the nephew of Blackjack Lanza and cousin to the Windham brothers, but is better known today as JBL .

    The original Blackjacks were a Hall of Fame team that were hugely popular throughout the National Wrestling Alliance during the 1970s and '80s. They brought their rough-house Texas tactics everywhere they went, making tag team gold.

    The New Blackjacks were two big men put together because they couldn't get over with their previous gimmicks, none of which had much variety.

    Windham was the Widowmaker, an outlaw who lived by his own rules, and Bradshaw copied just about every cowboy that ever wrestled—Stan Hansen, Dick Murdock, etc.

    So why does one team succeed while one fails?

    The time for rough and tough cowboys was over. This wasn't the Carolinas during the '70s; this was 1998 and the Attitude Era was going into full swing. Two cowboys weren't going to make it in Generation X.

    The original Blackjacks were an NWA team favored by southern wrestling fans, many of whom didn't follow the cartoon-like product that the WWF was pushing at the time.

    In the the '90s, the New Blackjacks were hoping to bank on the following of the originals, a team that many casual wrestling fans and WWF crowds had never heard of.

    The New Blackjacks didn't last long as Windham turned on Bradshaw to join Jim Cornette's fake NWA, which is a story for another day.
